Ralf Rangnick won’t try to change Paul Pogba’s mind if Manchester United’s record signing wants to quit Old Trafford in the summer.

Pogba flew back from Dubai on Friday following three weeks of rehab, with Rangnick warning that United’s injured players must have treatment at the club’s Carrington headquarters in future.

The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season when he will be able to leave United for nothing for a second time having rejoined for £89million in 2016.

And interim boss Rangnick insists that a club of United’s stature should not have to convince players to sign a new deal.

‘Players have to want to play and stay at a big club like Manchester United,’ said Rangnick.

‘If a player does not want to play for a club like Manchester United medium or long-term, I don’t think it makes sense to convince him to change his mind.

‘I don’t think anyone in the club should try to convince a player to stay.’

Rangnick spoke with Pogba by phone on Tuesday and the two men will meet face-to-face on Sunday.

Pogba has been recovering from a thigh injury in Dubai, but Rangnick will insist on players using the club’s medical facilities in future.

‘I would not want players to do their rehab abroad or anywhere else, but the decision on Paul was taken before I came,’ he added.

‘I have already spoken to the medical department, and in the future I want players with injuries to stay here.’

United are currently sixth in the Premier League standings with 24 points from 15 matches.

Rangnick won his first league game in charge 1-0 against Crystal Palace and take on Norwich at Carrow Road on Saturday night in the late kick-off.

As it stands, United are three points behind West Ham, who occupy fourth place.

Harry Kane questions the ruling that cost Lewis Hamilton the Formula One world championship

England captain Harry Kane weighs in on F1 world-title decider controversy… claiming that ‘bizarre rules’ cost Lewis Hamilton his eighth championship and allowed Max Verstappen to emerge victorious in Abu Dhabi

  • Lewis Hamilton looked on course for his eighth world title as he led the race
  • Nicholas Latifi crashed late on, meaning that a safety car needed to be deployed
  • Max Verstappen was allowed to close the gap to Hamilton going into the last lap
  • Racing on fresher tyres, he managed to overtake Hamilton to win his first title
  • Harry Kane feels Hamilton was hard done by, and was a victim of a strange ruling

Harry Kane has questioned the decision to allow Max Verstappen to close the gap to Lewis Hamilton while the safety car was deployed in the closing stages of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The resulting call from the FIA race control enabled the Red Bull driver to overtake the Brit on the last lap to claim his maiden world title.

Heading into the final race of the season, Verstappen and Hamilton were locked together on 369.5 points, but for much of Sunday’s title decider the latter clearly had the upper hand.

However, a controversial ruling allowed Max Verstappen to overtake him on the final lap

After edging past Verstappen at the start, Hamilton managed to keep his rival at bay and opened up a comfortable lead. He appeared to be set to win a record-breaking eighth world championship, before Nicholas Latifi crashed out of the race with five laps remaining.

With the safety car ensuring that racing wasn’t permitted, Verstappen pitted for fresher tyres, while Hamilton opted to stay out on the track.

It seemed that the race may end under the safety car, but race director Michael Masi instead decided that one more lap could be completed, and allowed Verstappen to go past the lapped cars so that he started the final lap only just behind Hamilton.

Verstappen used this to his advantage as he streaked past Hamilton at the death to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

It was arguably the most controversial ending to a season ever, and Kane was left bemused with how the race played out.

He believes common sense did not prevail, and that Lewis Hamilton was harshly treated

‘I’m new to F1 and it’s been amazing to watch Lewis and Max battle it out. I’m no expert on it but I feel like there’s some bizarre rules that give an unfair advantage like today? Why should Hamilton be penalised for somebody else’s crash?’ he posted on Twitter.

‘He literally raced the perfect race under the highest pressure and gets the World Championship taken away from him. Seems like common sense to keep the lead that you’d raced so hard to gain. Shame it had to end like that.’

Mercedes opted to lodge an appeal after the race, but Masi’s decision has since been upheld, meaning that Verstappen remains the Formula One champion for 2021.

They have announced their intention to appeal again, and this debate could rumble on for some time yet, but Kane has certainly made his stance clear on the dramatic incident.

Struggling Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard could be heading back to where it all began at Lille, with his former club keen to rescue him from his nightmare spell, according to reports.

Los Blancos are reportedly ready to cash in on the outcast, who has failed to reach the heights expected of him in the Spanish capital since his £90million switch from Chelsea in 2019.

He has scored just five goals in the last three seasons – and hasn’t hit the back of the net in this campaign – with his time in Madrid blighted by injuries and a lack of confidence on the pitch.

The underperforming Belgian could be used in a deal to send Jonathan David to LaLiga

Now Lille are ready to revive his career, as reported by Marca, and believe they could use one of their current players as bait.

Lille’s star forward Jonathan David is set to leave the club after his agent confirmed it would be his last season in Ligue 1 – and Lille are planning to include him in a deal to bring Hazard back, the report adds.

Real Madrid are said to be one of many clubs chasing David, who is leading the scoring charts in the French top flight with 13 goals, and Carlo Ancelotti is believed to be an admirer as he looks to revamp his forward line.

David’s agent said he was interested in moving to the Premier League, but added that his client was also tempted by LaLiga due to the technical strength of the players there.

The 21-year-old’s agent, Nick Mavromaras, revealed the following on Radio Canada: ‘For us, the goal is to finish the season in Lille, but it will be his last season there for several reasons. I think the Premier League is a good option for him.

‘I think that he likes Spain a lot also because he likes the feeling of the ball and the very technical players. These two leagues are a big priority for him, but nothing is excluded.’

Hazard’s career was kickstarted at his boyhood club Lille, where he impressed by scoring 50 goals in 194 appearances, including 22 in his final season.

That earned him a move to then Champions League holders Chelsea, who beat off competition from a host of top European sides. He would go on to become a Blues icon, scoring 110 goals in 352 games and winning six trophies before his ill-fated move to Spain.

Manchester United first-team coach Kieran McKenna has left Old Trafford to take over as manager at Ipswich Town.

United gave McKenna permission to speak to the League One club about replacing Paul Cook, who was sacked last week, and he was confirmed on a three-and-a-half year deal late on Thursday night.

He becomes the third member of United’s senior coaching team to depart in the space of a month after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was axed and Michael Carrick left the club after stepping in as caretaker boss for three games.

McKenna, who will get down to work in his new job from Monday, said: ‘I’d like to thank Mark Ashton and the owners for putting their faith in me and Martyn to take the club forward.

‘Leaving a club like Manchester United was obviously a difficult decision, but I strongly believe in the opportunity to build something here.

‘It feels like the right time, project and club to make my first step into first-team management.

‘For now, the focus for the team has to be on a huge game on Saturday. After that, I cannot wait to meet everyone and get to work.’

The 35-year-old Northern Irishman is taking United’s strength and conditioning coach Martyn Pert with him to Portman Road.

McKenna has been assisting interim manager Ralf Rangnick, but the German has appointed his own first-team coach in Chris Armas and also brought in sports psychologist Sascha Lense.

The Blues had spoken to former Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes about the vacant position at Portman Road but have gone with McKenna.

‘Kieran is a highly-respected young coach who has been working at the top level of English football and with one of the biggest clubs in world football for a number of years in Manchester United,’ Ashton said.

‘He comes to the Club with pedigree within the game and with exciting plans about how he is going to take the team forward. When we met, there was a clear meeting of minds in terms of how we will execute the vision of this football club.’

McKenna was brought to United by Jose Mourinho in 2016 and was part of Solskjaer’s coaching staff.

However, a dismal run of results against some of United’s biggest rivals saw Solskjaer sacked, leading to the club to appoint Rangnick as the interim boss last month.

McKenna remained on the first team coaching staff under the German. The Northern Irishman was known for his intense training sessions with the players under Solskjaer and is now looking to take his coaching methods that step further.

McKenna, 35, had his playing career cut short by injury and began coaching at Tottenham Hotspur’s academy and with their youth teams.

McKenna was highly rated at United for his work in developing young players out of the club’s academy into the first team set-up.

Ipswich had been on the hunt for a new boss after sacking Cook last month before naming John McGreal as their interim boss shortly after.

Meanwhile, teenage forward Anthony Elanga will sign a new long-term contract at United after featuring in the squad for Rangnick’s first three games.
